About the Nepali language
Overview
Nepali is written in Devanagari like Hindi, but its honorific system is considerably more elaborate — where Hindi offers three levels of address, Nepali layers several more, and getting the level wrong reads as rudeness or as odd over-formality rather than as a minor slip.
Where Nepali is spoken
Nepali is the official language of Nepal and holds official status in Sikkim in India, with large speaker populations in Darjeeling, Assam, and across the Northeast, as well as in Bhutan and among Gorkha communities throughout India. Roughly 16 million people in India speak it, and considerably more across the border.
The Nepali script
Nepali uses Devanagari, the same script as Hindi and Marathi, with the shirorekha line across the top. Because the script is shared, Nepali text looks familiar to Hindi readers — but shared script has repeatedly caused translation systems to blur the two languages together, producing Hindi vocabulary with Nepali endings.
What makes English to Nepali translation hard
A deep honorific hierarchy
Nepali distinguishes several grades of respect in both pronouns and verb forms, covering intimate, familiar, standard-polite and high-honorific address. English collapses all of this into 'you', so translating any sentence addressed to a person requires assuming a social relationship the source text never states.
Distinct from Hindi despite the shared script
Nepali has its own verb system, its own postpositions and a large body of everyday vocabulary that is not Hindi. The characteristic failure of automated Nepali translation is output that a Hindi speaker finds perfectly readable — which is precisely the signal that it is not really Nepali.
Cross-border vocabulary differences
Nepali as used in Nepal and Nepali as used in Sikkim and Darjeeling differ in administrative and technical vocabulary, shaped by different governments and school systems. The written standard is broadly shared, but expectations about the right word can vary by which side of the border the reader is on.
Nepali translation questions
Is Nepali the same as Hindi?
No. They share the Devanagari script and a good deal of Sanskrit-derived vocabulary, and speakers can often follow the gist of each other's speech, but the grammar, verb forms, honorific system and much everyday vocabulary differ. They are separate languages, not variants.
Which honorific level does the translation use?
It defaults to a neutral polite level, which is safe for most contexts. Using the Formal tone pushes it higher and Casual pushes it lower, which is the practical way to control it when you know your audience.
Can I translate from Nepali into other Indian languages?
Yes. Set 'From' to Nepali and select any target language on the site — English does not need to be involved on either side of the translation.
