About the Bengali language
Overview
Bengali carries one of the largest literary traditions in South Asia, and the language still shows it: there is a formal written register that grew out of that literature and a spoken register people actually use, and they differ enough that translating without picking one produces text that belongs to neither.
Where Bengali is spoken
Bengali is the official language of West Bengal and Tripura, and of the Barak Valley region of Assam. Across the border it is the national language of Bangladesh. Taken together it is spoken by well over 230 million people, placing it among the most spoken languages in the world — and unusually for an Indian language, most of its speakers live outside India.
The Bengali script
Bengali uses the Bengali-Assamese script (also called Eastern Nagari), which descends from the same Brahmi root as Devanagari and keeps a top line, but with curved rather than angular letterforms. Assamese uses very nearly the same script with a couple of distinct letters, which is why Bengali and Assamese text can look almost identical to an unfamiliar reader.
What makes English to Bengali translation hard
No grammatical gender at all
Unlike Hindi, Marathi or Gujarati, Bengali verbs and adjectives do not change for gender. This makes translating English into Bengali structurally easier than into most other Indian languages — but it also means going the other direction loses information, since a Bengali sentence often does not encode whether the speaker is male or female.
Three-way formality in verbs
Bengali distinguishes তুই (tui), তুমি (tumi) and আপনি (apni), and unlike English the verb ending changes for each. The pronoun is often dropped in natural speech, so the formality lives entirely in the verb — which means a translator cannot sidestep the decision by omitting the pronoun.
Sadhu bhasha versus cholito bhasha
The older literary register (সাধু ভাষা) uses longer verb and pronoun forms and still appears in formal or ceremonial writing; the modern colloquial register (চলিত ভাষা) is what newspapers, conversation and the internet use. Translating a casual English sentence into the literary register is a common and jarring mistake.
Bengali translation questions
Is Bengali the same in West Bengal and Bangladesh?
The written standard is largely shared and both sides read each other's books without trouble. Everyday vocabulary diverges in places — some Arabic and Persian-derived words are more common in Bangladesh, some Sanskrit-derived ones in West Bengal — and pronunciation differs by region on both sides.
Why does Bengali text look like Assamese?
They share a script. The Bengali-Assamese script is used for both, with Assamese having its own distinct forms for 'ra' and 'wa'. Beyond those letters, telling them apart from the text alone requires reading the actual words.
Does this tool handle Bengali proverbs and idioms?
Literal idiom translation is where any machine translation is weakest, in any language pair. Short, direct sentences translate reliably; a proverb will usually come back word-for-word rather than mapped to its Bengali equivalent. Treat idiomatic output as a draft to check.
