About the Hindi language

Overview

Hindi is the language most English speakers in India code-switch with every day, which is exactly why translating into it is less obvious than it looks. The word you want depends heavily on register: the same English sentence can come out sounding like a government circular, a Bollywood line, or something you would actually text a friend, and all three are correct Hindi.

Where Hindi is spoken

Hindi is one of the two official languages of the Union Government of India alongside English, and the official language of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Haryana, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Delhi. Counting second-language speakers it reaches well over half a billion people, which makes it the most widely understood language in the country — though understood is doing a lot of work in that sentence, since a Mumbai speaker's Hindi and a Patna speaker's Hindi can differ considerably in vocabulary.

The Hindi script

Hindi is written in Devanagari, the script with the horizontal shirorekha line running across the top of each word. That line is not decoration — it visually binds letters into words, which is why Devanagari text looks like it hangs from a rail. Marathi, Nepali, Konkani, Maithili and Dogri all use the same script, so seeing Devanagari on a page does not by itself tell you the language is Hindi.

What makes English to Hindi translation hard

Three levels of 'you'

English has one 'you'. Hindi has तू (tu), तुम (tum) and आप (aap), running from intimate-or-rude through casual to respectful, and the verb changes with each. A translation that picks the wrong one is grammatically fine and socially wrong — 'tu' to a stranger reads as an insult, 'aap' to a close friend reads as cold distance. When the relationship is not stated in the English, a sensible default is the neutral respectful form.

Verbs carry gender

Hindi verbs agree with the gender of the subject, so 'I went' is मैं गया (main gaya) from a man and मैं गई (main gayi) from a woman. English gives no such signal, so any translation of a first-person sentence is making an assumption. This is the single most common source of Hindi machine-translation errors that native speakers notice immediately.

Sanskritised versus Hindustani vocabulary

For most concepts Hindi has two vocabulary layers: a Sanskrit-derived formal one and a Persian/Arabic-derived everyday one. 'Question' is प्रश्न (prashna) in an exam paper and सवाल (sawaal) in conversation. Neither is wrong, but mixing registers within a sentence is what makes translated Hindi read as translated.

Hindi translation questions

Is Hindi the same as Hindustani or Urdu?

Spoken casually, Hindi and Urdu are close enough to be mutually intelligible — that shared everyday register is what people call Hindustani. They diverge in formal vocabulary (Sanskrit-derived for Hindi, Persian and Arabic-derived for Urdu) and completely in script: Hindi uses Devanagari, Urdu uses Perso-Arabic Nastaliq written right to left.

Why does the Hindi output sometimes use English words?

Because real Hindi does. Words like 'train', 'mobile', 'ticket' and 'office' have no everyday Hindi equivalent in active use — the Sanskrit coinages exist but sound stilted. Keeping the English loanword is usually the more natural translation, not a failure to translate.

Can I translate Hindi back into English here?

Yes. Set the 'From' language to Hindi and pick English as the target. The same applies to any pair on the site — English does not have to be one side of the translation.
