About the Maithili language

Overview

Maithili has a grammatical feature almost no other language in the world shares: its verbs agree not only with the subject but also with the person being addressed. The verb form changes depending on the social status of your listener even when that listener is not mentioned in the sentence at all.

Where Maithili is spoken

Maithili is spoken by roughly 13 million people in Bihar and Jharkhand, and by a substantial population across the border in Nepal's Terai region, where it is one of the most spoken languages. It received scheduled-language status in India in 2003 after a long campaign to recognise it as a language rather than a Hindi dialect.

The Maithili script

Maithili is written in Devanagari today. Historically it used Tirhuta, also called Mithilakshar, a distinct script related to the Bengali-Assamese family — which is a clue to Maithili's actual linguistic affinities, since it sits between the Hindi belt and the eastern languages rather than squarely inside either. Tirhuta survives mainly in manuscripts and ceremonial use.

What makes English to Maithili translation hard

Verbs agree with the listener

Maithili verb forms encode the status of the addressee alongside the subject, a system linguists describe as having multiple honorific grades built into conjugation. English carries no such information, so producing correct Maithili from an English sentence requires assuming a relationship between speaker and listener that the source never specifies.

Long treated as a Hindi dialect

Maithili was administratively classed under Hindi for decades, which means much less independent Maithili text was produced, catalogued and digitised than its speaker numbers would suggest. Machine translation systems inherit that gap directly.

Vocabulary drifts toward Hindi under automation

Because it shares Devanagari and considerable Sanskrit-derived vocabulary with Hindi, automated Maithili can slide into being Hindi with a few Maithili endings. Genuine Maithili has distinctive verb forms — 'chhi', 'achhi' and their relatives — and distinctive everyday words that mark it as itself.

Maithili translation questions

Is Maithili a dialect of Hindi?

No. It is a scheduled language of India with its own literary tradition going back centuries, its own historical script, and grammatical features Hindi does not have — including addressee agreement in verbs. It was administratively grouped with Hindi for a long time, which is where the misconception comes from.

Is Maithili the same on both sides of the India-Nepal border?

Broadly the same language with regional variation in vocabulary, much as any language spread across a border develops. It has official recognition in both countries.

How well does this tool handle Maithili?

Everyday sentences generally come out well. The addressee-agreement system is where automated translation is weakest, since the required information is simply absent from English input — if the honorific level matters for your use, have a speaker check it.
