About the Marathi language

Overview

Marathi is written in the same Devanagari script as Hindi, which regularly leads people to assume the two are close variants. They are not — Marathi has a three-way gender system Hindi lacks, a distinction between inclusive and exclusive 'we', and a substantial vocabulary of its own. Text that looks familiar can be grammatically quite unlike Hindi.

Where Marathi is spoken

Marathi is the official language of Maharashtra and holds co-official status in Goa. It is spoken by roughly 83 million people, concentrated in Maharashtra but with long-settled communities in Goa, Karnataka, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. Mumbai's status as India's commercial capital means Marathi coexists there with Hindi, Gujarati and English in daily use.

The Marathi script

Marathi uses a Devanagari variant known as Balbodh, essentially the same as Hindi's with a few additional characters and different conventions for certain sounds. Historically Marathi was also written in Modi script, a flowing cursive designed for fast writing without lifting the pen, which fell out of official use in the twentieth century but is still studied for reading historical documents.

What makes English to Marathi translation hard

Three genders, not two

Where Hindi has masculine and feminine, Marathi adds a neuter gender, and adjectives and verbs agree with all three. Nouns do not distribute across the genders the way a Hindi speaker would predict, so translating via Hindi assumptions produces agreement errors that sound distinctly foreign to a Marathi ear.

Inclusive versus exclusive 'we'

Marathi distinguishes आपण (aapan), meaning we-including-you, from आम्ही (aamhi), meaning we-but-not-you. English 'we' is ambiguous between the two, so every translation of a sentence starting with 'we' is making a choice the English never specified — and choosing wrong changes who the sentence includes.

Shared script, different words

Because Marathi and Hindi look alike on the page, machine translation has a tendency to fall back on Hindi vocabulary for words it is unsure about. Genuine Marathi uses its own everyday words, and the tell-tale sign of a weak Marathi translation is Hindi vocabulary in Devanagari with Marathi endings attached.

Marathi translation questions

If Marathi and Hindi use the same script, can a Hindi speaker read Marathi?

They can sound out every word, since the letters are the same, and will recognise a good deal of Sanskrit-derived vocabulary. Understanding a full sentence is a different matter — the verb system, gender agreement and much of the everyday vocabulary are not shared.

Does this tool translate into Marathi or into Hindi-flavoured Marathi?

It targets Marathi directly rather than routing through Hindi. If output ever looks like Hindi with Marathi endings, that is a translation quality problem worth reporting through the contact page — it is a known failure mode for closely related language pairs.

Can I use this for Marathi social media captions?

Yes. Each result has copy and share buttons for WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram, and the tone options let you shift the output between formal and casual before sharing.
